Midterm Information --reposted from announcements

Your midterm will consist of the following:

  1. Cumulative Vocab units 1-5 (25 points)
  2. Grammar (20 points)
  3. Literary Elements (30 points)
  4. PEE paragraph (25  points)

 

PEE Paragraph—see separate document in annoucements or Canvas with your options and grading rubric

 

Vocab—any word definition or fill in the blank units 1-5 (same format at your tests)

Literary Elements—I will give you an example or definition, and you will match to a literary element of “none of the above”

The following are literary elements that may be on the midterm-- there are two documents in Canvas 2017 Midterm Module that provide you with definitions and some examples (along with other literary elements that you don't need to worry about right now--scroll through to find the definitions you need). Remember there is also the Kahoot game (login information-- ginabessetti is username, sept191980 is password)

  1. Know definitions and be able to recognize examples for the following literary elements:
  1. Simile
  2. Metaphor
  3. Allusion
  4. Personification
  5. Synecdoche
  6. Onomatopoeia
  7. Antithesis
  8. Pun

Grammar—one section is directly pulled from your first grammar test (10 questions), and these may have multiple correct answers. This is the ONLY section that may have more than one correct answer, and it is clearly marked on the test.

The other grammar section is a written paragraph with words underlined. You will give me a part of speech for the underlined word.

Unit 1 grammar concepts that may be on the test: I refer you back to Grammar Packet #1 objectives:

  1. I can differentiate between and/or name different types of pronouns, including demonstrative, interrogative, personal, reflexive, intensive, indefinite, and reciprocal.
  2.  I can recognize a pronoun in a sentence.
  3. I can state the definition of a pronoun.
  4. I can state the definition of an antecedent and recognize the pronoun’s antecedent in a sentence
  5. I can state the definition of a noun and point nouns out in sentences.
  6. I can recognize verbs and verb phrases/ find verb or verb phrases in sentences
  7. I can differentiate between action and linking verbs.
  8. I know which questions to ask to figure out whether a verb is transitive or intransitive.
  9. I can look at a sentence and figure out whether the verb is transitive or intransitive.
  10. I know which questions an adjective answers.
  11. I know which questions an adverb answers.
  12. I know which part of speech an adjective modifies (defines)
  13. I know which parts of speech an adverb may modify (define)
  14. I can differentiate between adjectives and adverbs in sentences.
  15. I can label a sentence's parts with different parts of speech.
  16. I can name at least 10 prepositions off the top of my head and recognize prepositions in sentences.
  17. I can recognize whole prepositional phrases in sentences.
  18. I can name three articles and state which part of speech articles always belong to.
  19. I can define and recognize interjections.
  20. I can define and recognize conjunctions, including coordinating and correlative conjunctions. (Correlative conjunctions you will probably just have to memorize).
  21. I can name all eight basic parts of speech.
